The Residential Tenancy Act and Regulations require landlords to use a whole new set of “Standard Terms” in all tenancy agreements signed on or after January 1, 2004. BCNPHA has produced a Tenancy Agreement Template that includes all of the Standard Terms as well as additional terms that apply specifically to non-profit rental housing. The Template includes sections relating to subsidies, pets, number of residents, keys, fees, parking, storage and abandoned possessions and has a number of optional terms that some non-profits may wish to include. This flexible tool helps non-profit landlords to understand and comply with the Residential Tenancy Act. Housing providers will find everything they need to produce a customized tenancy agreement for their Society and their particular circumstances. The package also includes a Guide to the Standard Terms, a Checklist for Landlords and Tenants and a Condition Inspection Report form.

In spring 2018, non-profit housing providers from across British Columbia were asked to submit compensation and benefit data for each employee working in or contributing to the non-profit housing sector. The data was compiled into the new 2018 Sector Salary and Benefits Survey, which provides remuneration benchmarks for non-profit housing providers by geographical region, annual operating budget and type of service provision. Employee data includes those who are part-time or full-time and union or non-union.
BCNPHA has partnered with BC Housing to build the capacity of the non-profit housing sector around the procurement of appropriate technology to enhance the efficiency and sustainability affordable housing. In 2009 an industry Task Group was formed by BC Housing, on Costing and Targeting to develop a costing framework for the development of social housing projects, ensuring that the framework could be applied to regions and municipalities across the province. The Social Housing Cost Target Framework establishes a tool to determine acceptable project costs. The framework, which is based on a detailed review of more than 20 projects, is flexible, providing cost control while allows for design flexibility. The framework generates a target cost for a project based on the project data and allows social housing proponents to assess their projected project cost against this target.

The toolkit outlines the opportunities available for the non-profit housing sector around rooftop leasing as a sustainable revenue source, and provides resources and templates for negotiations with telecommunication companies. BCNPHA and BC Housing are working together around initiatives directed towards increasing the financial sustainability of non-profit housing societies in BC. As telecommunication data needs grow, there are increasing opportunities to consider rooftop leasing as a sustainable revenue resource. BC Housing has committed to retention of all revenue generated through rooftop leasing.
